Hypnotic flashings of the tail torpedoing her through the water caused those around to pause, unsure of her destination but knowing it to be perhaps more important than anything they might need done before the night turned the waters black. The speed she was pushing herself to attain told them as much, the determined look on her face solidified the conclusion.

There was something unnerving about the motions of that tail, the colouring of the hair and dorsal fin which trailed down her back to meet its root at her waist. The young woman appeared to disappear if she was gazed at from the wrong angle; her scales, hair and webbing an almost perfect blending together of the colours of the water itself.

The onlookers, though staring directly and avidly at the slight young thing, weren't sure of what they were seeing. The only word in their minds was 'stranger.'

Still the woman moved on without looking back, her breakneck pace too quick for any of the onlookers to catch, even had they wished to---the thought, of course, would never have crossed the minds of these stranger-fearing people.

It was only when she reached the very border of their waters that those onlookers were able to see the young woman finally cease motion. As they watched, the strangely coloured creature took a long breath, expelling the last of the fresh water from her body through the tiny gill slits behind her ears...

And then she was gone, off like a shot into the salted water beyond the borders.

'Ah. A salt lung,' the onlookers murmured, almost as one, returning to their mundane activities as the reason for the strangers haste was revealed.

Nice response! I really enjoyed this one. You took it in a completely different direction than I would've expected, but that's kind of what I love about these prompts. My brain takes it one way, somebody else goes the other.

Well written with a good concept. Thanks for participating! :)
